Celebrating Truck Driver Appreciation Week 2025
Each September, Truck Driver Appreciation Week reminds us of the vital role professional drivers play in keeping the economy moving. In 2025, the week is observed from September 14–20, offering a dedicated time to honor the men and women who keep America supplied and connected.
A Tradition Started by ATA
The American Trucking Associations (ATA) launched Truck Driver Appreciation Week in 1988. Their mission was to raise awareness of how critical the trucking industry is to daily life while recognizing the dedication of drivers. The tradition continues today, highlighting the professionalism and sacrifice behind the wheel.
Who Makes Up the Driver Community?
Truck drivers represent a wide range of backgrounds and experiences, but all share a commitment to their work. A closer look at the driver population:
- More than half (57%) are parents supporting families
- About 21% are under the age of 35
- Roughly 10% are military veterans
- Women now makle up around 16% of the professional driving workforce
What the Job Really Looks Like
Being a truck driver is demanding, both physically and mentally. Some fast facts:
- Earning a Commercial Driver License (CDL) requires training, testing, and strict safety standards
- Most drivers log 40–60 hours per week
- Many spend 300+ days a year on the road
- The average driver covers about 125,000 miles annually
- The U.S. is home to nearly 3.6 million professional drivers
- Over 60% of owner-operators are away from home more than 151 nights per year
- Trucks move approximately 73% of the nation’s freight—over $2 billion worth of goods every day
Tools and Support for Drivers
The trucking lifestyle can be challenging, but resources are available to help drivers succeed and stay connected:
- Driver-focused apps that track loads, find rest stops, and improve navigation
National organizations like the ATA, OOIDA, and Women in Trucking that advocate for driver interests - Online communities and forums where drivers share advice, stories, and support
- Guides to truck stops and facilities that provide rest, meals, and maintenance along major routes
